Berlin International Film Festival Names James Schamus Jury President

by ScreenCraft Staff on January 14, 2014

The Berlin International Film Festival has named James Schamus jury president for this year's festival.

Schamus will chair and oversee the international jury, which will vote for the winners of the festival's Gold and Silver Bear awards. This will not be his first time at the competition. Schamus was honored for one of his most well-known scripts as a screenwriter with Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet. The film won the Golden Bear in 1993.

“James Schamus knows the balancing act between Hollywood’s studio system and art-house cinema better than anyone,” the festival said today, as reported by Deadline.

The Berlin International Film Festival will run from February 6-16, opening with the in-competition world premiere of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Schamus is the former head of Focus Features and is well known in Hollywood as a producer and writer. He wrote the screenplays for Taking Woodstock, Hulk, Ride with The Devil, The Ice Storm and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He has produced more than 40 films, including Taking Woodstock, Hulk, Brokeback Mountain, Auto Focus, Buffalo Soldiers and Ride with the Devil. He won “Best Screenplay” at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for The Ice Storm, and he received an Academy Award nomination for “Best Adopted Screenplay” for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

So far, 2014 is paving out to be an honorary year for the Focus Features co-founder. Schamus will receive the Evelyn F. Burkey Award at the 2014 Writers Guild Awards in New York on Feb. 1. Check out the ScreenCraft post about the news.
