10 Most Iconic Movie Music Scores

1. Star Wars: Composer John Williams wrote the score for all six Star Wars films and received an Oscar for Best Music, Original Score in 1978. The film's main theme, "Luke’s Theme," is among the most widely recognized songs in motion picture history.

2. Chariots of Fire: The 1981 musical score by Greek electronic composer Vangelis topped Billboard 200 for four weeks. Vangelis won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Score in 1982.

3. The Godfather: Nino Rota, who has composed more than 130 movie soundtracks, composed all music for The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, as well as for the TV miniseries and the 1992 video trilogy.  The soundtrack's "Main Title" is a classical recording that establishes a theme for the rest of the score.

4. Indiana Jones:  John Williams is one of the most well known, awarded, and financially successful composers in US history. He wrote the soundtracks for all four Indiana Jones films. 

5. Titanic:  James Horner composed, orchestrated and conducted the iconic Titanic soundtrack,  which Sony Classical released in 1997. The soundtrack sold over 30 million copies and became one of the best-selling albums of all time.

6. The Lord of the Rings: Howard Shore has composed the scores for more than 80 films, including the scores for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He won the Best Music, Original Song Oscar for each movie. The London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Voices performed the music on the soundtrack.

7. Harry Potter: John Williams composed and conducted the first three Harry Potter films, which are some of the most popular movie themes in recent history. Williams was nominated for several awards for these films and won the 2003 Critics Choice Award for Best Composer for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He also won three BFI Film Music Awards for the three films.

8. Rocky: The high-intensity beats and lyrics on many of the songs make them iconic amp-up or workout songs. Bill Conti composed RockyIIIIIV, and Rocky Balboa. He has composed more than 100 film scores and was nominated for several awards for his work on the Rocky soundtracks. 

9. Batman 1989: Danny Elfman composed the musical score for the original Batman movie that was released in 1989, as well as Batman Returns and Batman: The Animated Series. Elfman won the BFI Film Music Award in 2002 for Batman Returns.

10. Inception: Hans Zimmer composed the score for the 2002 film, which marked his third time working with Christopher Nolan. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score.
