WATCH: Domestic Trailer For Hayao Miyazaki's 'The Wind Rises'

by ScreenCraft Staff - updated on July 26, 2023

One of Japan's greatest animation directors, Hayao Miyazaki, is retiring from the business and giving his final bow with The Wind Rises, an art film that has delighted festival goers thus far. The 72-year-old's last movie is being heralded as a cinematic masterpiece.

According to many fans and critics, including ScreenCraft staffer Landon McDonald, The Wind Rises is a poignant final film for Miyazaki, as it contains the fluid, beautiful animation imagery that are a staple of  the filmmaker's style.

In his review for ScreenCraft, McDonald called the film a "thoughtful historical drama buoyed by Miyazaki’s talent for blending heady social commentary with visually poetic fantasy sequences ... Awash in the lush, fluid animation style audiences have come to expect from Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, every frame of The Wind Rises is a painterly feast of light and color."

The Wind Rises is an animated, historical drama full of poetic fantasy sequences that Miyazaki adapted from his own 2009 manga serial. It tells the story of Japanese aviation engineer Jiro Horikoshi, who developed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane. The film opens with a preteen Jiro who decides to dedicate his life to designing and building planes, then follows his career path as he becomes a master plane designer, and, of course, falls in love along the way.

The English-subtitled trailer was released at the Toronto Film Festival, and today, Deadline Hollywood released the domestic version. Watch the trailer below:

Throughout his long career, Miyazaki made 10 features, wrote dozens of projects, worked in the art department for many TV series, directed shorts and worked as a producer, actor, editor and miscellaneous crew. He is well known for his 2001 film Spirited Away and his 1997 film Princess Mononoke.
