Jeff Buhler to Script “The Grudge” Reboot

by ScreenCraft Staff on March 21, 2014

Jeff Buhler has been set to draft the reboot of the 2004 horror film, “The Grudge,” Deadline recently reported.

“The original starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, cost around $10 million, grossed $187 million worldwide and hatched a sequel,” wrote Deadline. “It was based on the Japanese horror thriller Ju-On by Shimizu. The new one will be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane exec producing.”

In the original film, Gellar played a nurse in Tokyo who becomes afflicted by a supernatural spirit that possesses its victims. Takashi Shimazu directed the original film, which served as an example for low-cost genre films.

Buhler is known for writing the screenplay for the 2008 film “Midnight Meal Train.” He also wrote, directed, and acted in the 2008 video, “Insanitarium.” Currently, Deadline reports the writer is separately working on a new version of “Jacob’s Ladder.”

In other recent news, the Sundance Institute announced that it is expanding its labs program into television and online content, establishing the first Sundance Institute Episodic Story Lab. This venture into small-screen storytelling will be held this fall at the Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah. Check out the ScreenCraft post about the news.
