2013 ScreenCraft Comedy Script Contest Semi-Finalists Announced!

by ScreenCraft on November 1, 2013

Dear writers,

Today we announce the semi-finalists of our first annual comedy script contest, and getting to this point has not been a piece of cake. Nor has it been a walk in the park, a midnight run, a breeze, no sweat, like taking candy from a baby or like shooting fish in a barrel.

If we had received a batch of...to be perfectly blunt and plain...bad scripts, our team of judges (myself included) could have wrapped the contest in an afternoon. But what we got was, more often than not, really funny and full of promise. It's refreshing to know that there are scores of talented screenwriters out there writing original scripts that are full of voice, distinctive and appealing characters, creative premises and relatable themes. We need scripts like that now more than ever, because audiences aren't settling for mediocre and derivative retreads anymore; take a look at the box office.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for waiting patiently for us to announce these results. We don't set firm deadlines with our contests so much as we indicate general timeframes, because honestly, when you do it the way we do it, it takes as long as it takes. Our judges read every word on every page, rather than just skimming the first ten pages, which is all but an industry standard. Though we agree that a successful script will hook the reader by the first ten pages, we don't want to shortchange writers who are paying to have their scripts thoroughly considered, and we want to be confident in the results that we put out and the scripts that we champion.

We wish we could highlight all of the scripts we receive and personally support every writer we come across, but like the immortal line in Highlander (which, coincidentally, is being rebooted as we speak with a novice director attached...did I mention we need fresh scripts with fresh ideas?), in the end there can be only one.

Check out the official list of semi-finalists here and stay tuned for the upcoming announcement of the top ten finalists, including the grand prize winner and the runner-up.

Thanks to all who submitted and please, please keep writing.
